Position Summary

The Pastor of Congregational Care and Youth serves as both shepherd and disciple‑maker, providing pastoral leadership to the church’s ministries of care, compassion, youth, and young adults. This role builds and grows a vibrant youth and young adult ministry while ensuring that every member of the congregation experiences Christ’s love in times of joy, sorrow, and need.

 

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to: Lead Pastor
  • Works closely with:
    • Pastoral staff and ministry directors
    • Youth and young adult leaders and volunteers
    • Care, compassion, and small group leaders

 

Key Ministry Responsibilities

  1. Youth and Young Adult Ministry
  • Build and grow a passionate, Christ‑centered youth and young adult ministry that evangelizes, disciples, and equips students and young adults to become servants, leaders, and missionaries for Jesus.
  • Develop ministry aligned with the church’s vision and mission, including:
    • Participation in congregational worship
    • Student worship gatherings
    • Youth/young adult Sunday school or alternative formats
    • Weekly formation groups and activities
    • Retreats, camps, conferences, and mission trips
    • Community-focused outreach ministries.
  • Provide primary pastoral care to youth and young adults, building appropriate relationships with students, young adults, and their parents, and equipping lay leaders to do the same.
  • Engage students where they are by:
    • Visiting schools, games, events, and common hang‑outs
    • Offering appropriate pastoral counsel or referrals
    • Mentoring and raising up student and young adult leaders.
  1. Congregational Care and Compassion
  • Serve as shepherd of the church’s ministries of care and compassion so that no one suffers alone and every member experiences Christ’s love.
  • Provide direct spiritual and emotional care with the lead pastor through:
    • Visitation (home, hospital, care facilities)
    • Pastoral counseling and crisis response
    • Weddings, funerals, and memorial services.
  • Oversee and develop support ministries such as Divorce Care, Grief Care, and other recovery or life‑stage support groups, either directly or through trained leaders.
  • Partner with small/community group leaders to foster cultures of care, prayer, and practical support within groups.
  • Oversee ministries of benevolence, widow care, and congregational compassion initiatives, ensuring compassionate distribution and faithful stewardship of benevolence resources.​
  • Coordinate prayer chains, card‑writing teams, and visitation ministries to extend care to those who are sick, grieving, isolated, or in crisis.
  • Build partnerships with local ministries and agencies that align with the church’s compassion and outreach mission.

 

Administrative and Leadership Duties

  • Direct and manage administrative responsibilities for youth, young adult, and congregational care ministries, including:
    • Calendaring and planning
    • Coordinating events, retreats, trips, and care initiatives
    • Managing funds, budgets, and fundraisers
    • Coordinating facility use
    • Promotion and communication.
  • Recruit, equip, and support volunteer teams for:
    • Youth and young adult ministry
    • Visitation, prayer, and care ministries
    • Support and compassion ministries.
  • Provide leadership development for adult and student leaders, fostering an equipping culture where members discover and use their gifts.
  • Maintain accurate care records and follow‑up plans using church management systems, ensuring appropriate confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with pastoral staff to ensure coordinated care, unified discipleship pathways, and consistent theology and practice of ministry.
  • Attend staff meetings, worship gatherings, leadership events, and other church‑wide functions as part of the pastoral team.
  • Assist pastors and staff with seasonal and special projects as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Core Competencies

  • Ordained or licensed minister (or in process), in agreement with the church’s statement of faith.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; seminary or equivalent theological training preferred.
  • 3–5 years of pastoral ministry experience, with demonstrated effectiveness in youth/young adult ministry and congregational care.
  • Demonstrated skills in:
    • Congregational care
    • Preaching/teaching and discipleship and willingness to grow in these areas.
    • Volunteer recruitment, training, and leadership development.
  • High emotional intelligence, empathy, confidentiality, and humility, with a heart for shepherding people of all ages.
  • Strong collaboration skills and an equipping mindset, able to build healthy teams and work well with staff, parents, and lay leaders.

 

Through this role, the Pastor of Congregational Care and Youth helps ensure that students, young adults, and the wider congregation experience the love and grace of Jesus through a caring, discipling church community.
